A sporting principle, not a product endorsement
Fair play in cricket concerns conduct as well as the written Laws. MCC’s Spirit of Cricket preamble places respect at the centre of the game and gives captains a major responsibility while extending that responsibility to players, officials, coaches and others. Playing hard and playing fairly are not opposites: competitive cricket still depends on acceptance of the umpires’ authority and respect for opponents.
The Laws and playing conditions
MCC is the custodian of the Laws of Cricket. Its current Fourth Edition of the 2017 Code includes the Spirit of Cricket preamble and provisions on unfair play and player conduct. The Laws are the general foundation; a competition can also operate under its own playing conditions. MCC explains that international playing regulations may introduce differences. When checking a specific match incident, consult the applicable competition conditions rather than relying on an isolated social-media quotation.
For players and spectators
A practical starting point is to separate disagreement from disrespect. A player or supporter can ask what rule applies without abusing an opponent or official. A match report should describe a disputed decision accurately and identify what is confirmed. A clip without the surrounding match context may not establish the full facts. Umpiring decisions, disciplinary judgments and any competition sanction should be attributed to the relevant authority, not reconstructed from a score alone.
The preamble encourages self-discipline when things go against a team and recognition of the opposition’s success. For junior cricket it also places importance on the example set by teachers, coaches and parents. That makes fair play a shared responsibility rather than a label earned merely by winning.
Fair play, awards and this website
An official competition award is a separate matter with its own criteria and organiser. This guide does not publish an IPL or WPL award table or claim an official score for conduct. Such a table would require the organiser’s records and a stated season. A name shared by a website, operator or award does not prove they are connected.
On Score Live, Fair Play is simply the name of an independent cricket section. It contains live match cards, upcoming fixtures, results, supplied statistics and educational guides. It is not an operator, betting service, affiliate endorsement or claim of official affiliation. The website brand remains Score Live.
Bring the same discipline to reporting
Respectful cricket coverage distinguishes a fact, a source statement and an opinion. A supplied score is a data point; a published article is dated reporting; a forecast requires evidence and a method. Unconfirmed team lists should not be called confirmed playing XIs. A missing statistic should not become an invented zero. These choices are small but important ways to make information useful and fair to the teams being discussed.
