IPL Fair Play Award explained: points, rules, 2026 winner and 2020 comparison

What Fair Play means in cricket, how IPL award rankings differ from league points, and what verified 2026, 2020 and WPL sources actually show.

Score Live · Cricket explainerPublished: 8 Oct 2026 · 21:54 ISTFacts checked: 8 October 202618 min read

The IPL Fair Play Award recognises a team's conduct across a season. It is separate from match scores, league points and net run rate. Punjab Kings won the IPL 2026 Fair Play Award; Mumbai Indians won in 2020. The tables below explain those results while keeping official evidence separate from reported numerical standings. 1 2 6

If you've searched for “what is fair play in cricket”, “IPL fair play points table” or “fair play ranking in IPL”, the difficult part is often knowing which kind of points a page is showing. A team can perform well in a conduct table without topping the league. The team receiving the Fair Play trophy need not be the tournament champion.

What is fair play in cricket?

Fair play means playing within cricket's Laws and its Spirit: respecting opponents and officials, accepting umpire decisions and maintaining self-discipline. The MCC's Spirit of Cricket Preamble places the main responsibility on captains, while extending responsibility to players and match officials. Respect is central to that framework. 12

This applies to how a match is played, not just who wins it. Playing hard is consistent with playing fairly. The Preamble calls for both, and also refers to congratulating opponents and thanking officials. A disappointing result doesn't excuse poor behaviour; a strong performance doesn't make every action acceptable.

The phrase fair play cricket therefore describes a wider sporting principle. Fair Play Award describes a particular honour created by a competition. Fair Play points describe numerical ratings when an award table actually publishes them. These terms are related, but they aren't interchangeable. Cricket can require fair conduct even where no season award or Fair Play points table exists.

For match numbers such as runs, wickets and overs, use our separate guide to reading a cricket scorecard. A score of 150/4 tells you runs and wickets. It tells you nothing by itself about a team's Fair Play rating.

What is the Fair Play Award in IPL, and who decides it?

IPL's official 5 April 2017 awards notice describes a season award for the team that the umpires judge to have best upheld the spirit of the game across league and playoff matches. It says the umpires rate both teams in each match. This is the strongest official award-framework notice located for this guide, but it is historical: the notice also says the awards information is subject to change at BCCI's discretion. 1

The notice lists four qualitative criteria:

  • Upholding the spirit of the game during the match.
  • Showing respect to the opposition.
  • Showing respect for the Laws of the game.
  • Showing respect to the umpires.

It also mentions additional credit for exceptional behaviour, giving examples such as signalling that a catch wasn't clean or walking without waiting for an umpire's decision. Those examples explain the intent of the award. They don't establish an automatic number of bonus points for a particular incident.

Umpire assessment and trophy presentation are different roles. The official framework assigns ratings to umpires. A sponsor or invited presenter handing over the trophy at the final is not evidence that the presenter determined the ratings. In the 2026 presentation video, Wonder Cement records the award being presented to Punjab Kings. 3

The result should be described as final once supported by the completed-season presentation. A team leading an in-season table has not yet won the award. Nor should one memorable sporting gesture be treated as proof of a season winner: the award framework concerns conduct across matches.

IPL Fair Play points system: what does 4 + 2 + 2 + 2 mean?

Recent media explainers commonly describe four points for upholding the spirit of the game and two each for respect for opponents, cricket's Laws and umpires. Sporting News reported that allocation in its April 2025 explainer, along with a stated ten-point maximum per team per match. That is a reported recent scoring explanation, not a current official numerical rulebook verified here. 5

The official 2017 IPL notice lists the same four behavioural dimensions, but does not publish their numerical allocation, a hard cap, the season aggregation method or a Fair Play tiebreak. Its reference to exceptional-conduct credit doesn't explain how such credit interacts with a claimed ten-point ceiling. We therefore don't describe 4+2+2+2 as a binding official 2026 regulation.

This distinction matters when the numbers disagree with a general explainer. The official 2020 final graphic shows some averages above ten. A final 2025 awards report also gives Chennai Super Kings 143 points in 14 matches, displayed as 10.21. Neither should be forced into an assumed universal ten-point cap. The 2025 winner was CSK, not whichever team led a provisional table earlier that season. 6 18

Use the reported allocation to understand what recent coverage is discussing. Use the actual season source to read its table. Don't reconstruct missing ratings from match results, invent the points attached to a gesture, or apply a later explanation retrospectively to 2020.

Fair Play ranking versus the IPL league points table

An IPL league table records competitive results and includes fields such as wins, losses, points and net run rate. A Fair Play table concerns conduct ratings. A match scorecard records play within an individual match. A disciplinary notice concerns an alleged offence and its sanction. Each answers a different question.

A useful first check is the table heading. Does it explicitly say Fair Play, or does it show league points and NRR? A “points” column alone is not enough. Our live cricket scores and match scorecard section are match-data views; they are not a live Fair Play Award feed.

Where a Fair Play table supplies matches, total points and average, the arithmetic can be checked by dividing its published total by its published match count. That is a check on the displayed table, not proof of the competition's complete ranking regulation. Different match counts make a raw-total comparison misleading. Teams reaching different stages can have different numbers of matches; the historical IPL award notice expressly includes playoffs. 1

Also resist reading too much into rounded averages. Two rows displaying the same average may have different underlying precision, or a source may list them in a particular order without explaining why. No current official Fair Play tiebreak was found in the material reviewed. A displayed rank is not evidence of an undisclosed tiebreak.

IPL 2026 Fair Play Award winner and reported final standings

Punjab Kings (PBKS) received the IPL 2026 Fair Play Award. Official IPL season material names Punjab Kings, and the final-presentation video independently supports the recipient. This is a completed-season award result, not an estimate of who might win. 2 3

The following numerical table has a different level of provenance: it is a transcription of CricTracker's post-final 2026 table, marked updated on 31 May 2026 after RCB–GT. It is a dated secondary-source table, not an official IPL numerical leaderboard and not a continuously refreshed feed. Its source-displayed averages are preserved. 4

Why PBKS's 140 and GT's 169 don't reverse the award result

The reported table lists PBKS first with 140 points from 14 matches, average 10.00. Gujarat Titans have 169 points from 17 matches, average 9.94. Dividing the published totals by the match counts explains the displayed averages: 140 ÷ 14 = 10; 169 ÷ 17 is approximately 9.941176. 4

GT have the higher total, but they played more matches in this source table. PBKS have the higher average and are the verified award recipient. Those facts explain why simply selecting the biggest total would produce the wrong answer in this case. They do not establish a universal official averaging formula for every season, or a tiebreak for teams with equal averages.

PBKS average 10.00 from 140 in 14 matches; GT 9.94 from 169 in 17
Zero-based scale; only the PBKS and GT rows are plotted. Numeric source: CricTracker [4]. The award recipient is separately verified by official material.

A source inconsistency you should know about

CricTracker displays CSK's average as 9.85 against 138 points in 14 matches. The quotient is approximately 9.857142, which conventionally rounds to 9.86 at two decimal places. We retain the displayed 9.85 with a note rather than quietly correcting the source. KKR and LSG also have 138 from 14 in the table, yet are listed fourth and fifth after CSK. The source order doesn't establish the governing tiebreak. 4

That caveat is one reason the chart focuses on PBKS and GT, whose displayed numbers reconcile at the shown precision. The full table remains useful as attributed historical reporting. It should not be mistaken for an independently verified official set of umpire ratings.

IPL 2020 Fair Play Award winner and official final table

Mumbai Indians won the IPL 2020 Fair Play Award. IPL's official Instagram post of 10 November 2020 names MI first, with an attached graphic labelled “Dream11 IPL 2020”, “Paytm Fair Play Award” and “FINAL”. That graphic supplies the numerical rows below. An archived official IPL statistics page preserves the same final team order, while The Indian Express independently confirms the winner. 6 7 8

Unlike the 2026 numeric table above, this is a transcription from a contemporaneous official final graphic. The archived statistics HTML supports the order, not all numerical columns. We preserve the graphic's one-decimal averages and its historical team names, including Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

MI's 155 points from 15 matches give a quotient of approximately 10.333333, displayed as 10.3. CSK and KKR both show 143 from 14, displayed as 10.2. These values are part of the final graphic; they are not invented bonuses or an error corrected by this guide. The graphic doesn't supply the exact 2020 numerical scoring rubric. 6

The table also shows why total points alone cannot explain its final order. Sunrisers Hyderabad have 159 points across 16 matches, more total points than MI, but are listed fourth with a displayed 9.9 average. Delhi Capitals have the same total as MI, 155, but across 16 matches and with a displayed 9.7 average. Match counts and display precision belong beside the totals.

IPL 2026 versus 2020: what can you compare safely?

The clearest comparison is who received the award and what each season's cited table actually displays. PBKS won in 2026; MI won in 2020. Both source tables include totals, match counts and averages. Their evidential status and precision differ, so this is not a controlled measurement of which team across those years was “more sporting”.

Cross-season conduct comparisonNot established from these numbersDo not retroactively apply a later ten-point explanation

A chart placing MI's 10.3 beside PBKS's 10.00 without the rules caveat would invite an unsupported conclusion. The 2020 numerical rules have not been established here, and a later reported ten-point explanation doesn't reconcile with that year's official averages. Different numerical displays alone don't prove a change in scoring policy either; that would require the relevant regulations.

The expansion from eight rows in 2020 to ten in the cited 2026 table also makes team-by-team historical comparisons less straightforward. Keep season labels and historical names visible. Don't use a current team name to silently rewrite an official old graphic, and don't merge two seasons into a single ranking.

WPL Fair Play Award: winner verified, numeric table not established

Mumbai Indians received the 2026 WPL Dr. Fixit Fair Play Award. Royal Challengers Bengaluru were the WPL champions. Official WPL season material identifies the award recipient; the official final report confirms RCB's title. Sportstar's presentation coverage also names MI for Fair Play. The separate winners make the distinction especially easy to see. 9 10 17

No official 2026 WPL Fair Play table containing rank, matches, total points and average was located in the materials reviewed. There is therefore no numeric WPL Fair Play standings table in this guide. We don't estimate one, turn WPL's league points into conduct points, or copy an IPL formula into WPL.

WPL's 2026 Playing Conditions and Code of Conduct contain Spirit-of-Cricket obligations. That verifies the importance of fair conduct, but it doesn't establish an award-points allocation. A prize amount reported at a presentation is money, not an award rating. A WPL winner tile confirms a recipient, not the missing scores of every team. 11 16

IPL, WPL, T20, MCC and ICC: which rules apply?

MCC publishes the Laws of Cricket; governing bodies and competitions can add playing regulations. The MCC edition checked for this guide is the 2017 Code, fourth edition (2026), dated 1 October 2026. Its Preamble explains the Spirit of Cricket, while Law 41 concerns unfair play and Law 42 concerns unacceptable player conduct. 12

These are match-governance provisions. Depending on the applicable clause and circumstances, remedies can include warnings, penalty runs and reports, and serious player-conduct provisions can involve suspension or removal. Five penalty runs are match sanctions under specified provisions; they aren't five season Fair Play points. Don't assume every unfair-play offence follows an identical sanction sequence.

The ICC men's T20I Playing Conditions checked here, effective October 2026, incorporate cricket's Laws with their own conditions and reproduce the Spirit framework. The ICC Code of Conduct provides a separate disciplinary process and states that specified unfair-play provisions supplement rather than replace the on-field conditions. These sources don't publish a universal IPL-style conduct-award table. 13 14

T20 is a format, not an award rulebook. The fact that IPL, WPL and international T20 matches share a format doesn't mean they share an award scale. Likewise, ICC team rankings measure performance through the published ranking methodology, not an IPL Fair Play rating. Check the rules of the particular tournament before expecting a Fair Play trophy or table. 15

Does a fine or demerit point automatically reduce Fair Play points?

No automatic conversion is established by the sources used here. A disciplinary decision can concern a player's conduct; a Fair Play Award is a team season honour. The same behaviour may be relevant to conduct assessment, but that doesn't justify inventing a numerical deduction. A match-fee fine, demerit point, penalty run and award rating are different units.

When reporting an incident, retain the sanction named in the official notice. Don't translate a percentage fine into Fair Play points, or claim a team has lost an award because one player was sanctioned unless the organiser actually announces that outcome.

How to check a Fair Play points table or “live” ranking

Start with the season, then the source and timestamp. A page published during a tournament may be a provisional snapshot even if its title promises live standings. A post-final table is historical data, not a running feed. The tables on this page are fixed, cited season records checked for this guide on 8 October 2026.

  1. Confirm that the heading identifies a Fair Play table rather than the league points table.
  2. Check the season and whether its cutoff is in-season or after the final.
  3. Look for match counts, totals and the precision of the displayed average.
  4. Compare a claimed winner with official award or presentation evidence.
  5. Treat unexplained discrepancies as limitations; don't repair them into invented official rules.

An empty or unavailable Fair Play table doesn't mean every team has zero points. It means the data isn't supplied by that source. Live runs, wickets and match results cannot fill that gap. For the cricket data that is actually available on Score Live, visit Fair Play live scores or explore the other cricket guides.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Fair Play Award in IPL?

It is a team conduct award. IPL's official 2017 framework says umpires judge which team best upheld the spirit of the game across league and playoff matches. It is separate from the tournament title. 1

Who won the IPL 2026 Fair Play Award?

Punjab Kings. Official IPL season material and the final-presentation evidence support PBKS as the completed-season recipient. 2 3

Who won the IPL 2020 Fair Play Award?

Mumbai Indians. IPL's official final graphic lists MI first, and contemporaneous reporting independently confirms the award. 6 8

Why did PBKS win despite GT having a higher total?

The cited 2026 table reports PBKS at 140/14, average 10.00, and GT at 169/17, average 9.94. PBKS are the verified recipient. Raw totals don't account for different match counts; the complete official aggregation regulation wasn't located. 4

Are Fair Play points added to IPL league points?

They belong to different tables and purposes. Don't add a conduct-table total to result points or use it to calculate qualification. A match score and NRR are also separate from Fair Play ratings.

Is ten always the maximum Fair Play average?

Not a safe historical assumption. Recent secondary explainers report a ten-point match scale, but the official 2020 final graphic includes averages above ten. The current official numeric cap and the exact 2020 rubric were not verified here. 5 6

Who gives the points: umpires or the sponsor?

The official award framework says umpires rate teams. The person presenting the trophy has a presentation role; that doesn't establish a scoring role. 1

Is there an official Fair Play tiebreak?

No current official tiebreak was located in the material reviewed. Equal displayed averages and consecutive ranks in a secondary table don't establish one.

Who received the WPL 2026 Fair Play Award?

Mumbai Indians received the Dr. Fixit Fair Play Award; RCB won the championship. No official full numeric WPL Fair Play standings were located for this guide. 9 10

Does every ICC or T20 competition have IPL-style Fair Play points?

No universal scheme is established by the checked sources. Fair-conduct duties apply under the relevant Laws and conditions, but a tournament's separate award system must be verified from that tournament's own material. 12 13
